What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a pain-free, safe way to take an image of the internal organs of the body and is frequently used to view a growing fetus. The ultrasound uses sound waves transmitted through a transducer. The transducer collects the information as the sound bounces back and the computer then creates an image. Ultrasound images are seen in real-time, which means they can show the structure and movement of internal organs and blood flowing through vessels.
How is an ultrasound performed?
The ultrasound procedure begins placing gel on the abdomen which works as a conductor for the sound waves. The doctor or ultrasound technicion uses the transducer to produce the sound waves and transmit them into the uterus. The sound waves bounce off bones and tissues, and the sound waves are recorded by the transducer and generates black and white images of the fetus.
What types of ultrasound are there?
There are seven types ultrasound exams however the principle is essentially the same. These include:
- Transvaginal Scans – Probe transducers are inserted inside the vagina to produce sonogram images. Frequently used during the preliminary stages of pregnancy.
- Standard Ultrasound – An ultrasound exam that utilizes a transducer guided over the stomach to produce 2-D images of the fetus.
- Advanced Ultrasound – The exam targets a suspected problem and employs more high-level equipment.
- Doppler Ultrasound – This measures slight changes in the frequency of the ultrasound waves as they rebound off moving objects. The Doppler ultrasound is frequently used to view blood flowing through arteries and veins as well as the blood following through the umbilical cord.
- 3-D Ultrasound – Uses unique probes and software to produce 3-D images of the growing fetus.
- 4-D or Dynamic 3-D Ultrasound – Utilizes scanners to view the face and movements of the baby before delivery.
- Fetal Echocardiography – Utilizes ultrasound waves to evaluate the baby’s heart function and anatomy to help identify probable congenital heart defects.
