About Dr. Gould

What is your care philosophy?

My perspective on patient health is that it is a joint venture. As physicians, we must listen to what patients want, consider their problems, and build a plan that we both agree on. I really enjoy talking with my patients.

What inspired you to pursue a career in gynecological medicine?

I was really very interested in both fertility and endocrinology, and I was especially interested in the surgery and medical sides of those systems. After more than 2,000 deliveries as an obstetrician earlier in my career, I now exclusively focus on gynecology and gynecological surgery.

What improvements to women’s care have you seen since you began practicing medicine?

Over the last 30+ years, I’ve seen dramatic changes in technology and also in sonography, contraception, and surgery. The number of patients having major surgeries has really declined, and we’ve become much better at diagnosing patients than ever before thanks to improvements in 3D mammography and dramatic changes in ultrasound. Now when we find something suspicious, we can often do a minimally invasive procedure, avoiding major surgery and getting people back to their everyday lives sooner.

What is the latest birth control?

There are two methods that I would call out as the latest: 1) subdermal implants such as Nexplanon that can be used for up to 3 years and may cause women to have no periods during that time; and 2) Essure, which is a permanent, minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be done in 10-15 minutes, so the patient can go home the same day.

Are you from the DC area?

I grew up in New Jersey and later moved to Baltimore where I attended high school. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland where I met my wife. My wife (a former social worker and now a tutor for children with learning disabilities) grew up in the DC area, and we chose to make this area our home as well. We have two adult sons, Dan and Mike.

How did being a physician impact your experience as a parent?

Being a doctor gave me a great appreciation for a balance between career and family. Hang in there, new parents. It will get better!

If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…?

I am a waterman, and I even studied to be an oceanographer for two years before changing my focus to medicine. Whenever I can, I try to spend my weekends on the water — whether it’s on a sailboat, a kayak, or a paddleboard. I also love fishing for Rockfish!

Helped with all my critical issues. He basically saved my life. I had to stop going to the office because the billing department was incompetent and they were causing me to get large bills. They keep billing my insurance with experimental codes.

However, if Dr. Gould go to another office, I will see him again.
